Infrastructure Auditing
We provide detailed infrastructure assessments — cabling, rack layout, labeling, and asset verification — to help clients understand their current environment. Our audits support compliance, documentation, and future planning. PYLON DC conducts thorough, methodical infrastructure audits that give you a complete, accurate picture of your data center environment — identifying issues, documenting assets, and providing actionable recommendations for improvement.
Documentation Drift Is the Default State
Every environment starts documented and stops being documented on the first undocumented change. Six months later the CMDB shows a server that was decommissioned, a port map points at a switch that has been replaced, and three cabinets hold equipment nobody can attribute to a cost centre.
That gap is expensive in specific ways. You pay maintenance on hardware that no longer exists. A change window overruns because the dependency nobody recorded turns out to matter. An audit asks for a serial-level inventory and someone spends a fortnight with a clipboard producing it. And the capacity question — can we fit twelve more nodes in this row — gets answered from memory rather than measurement, which is how rows end up over-subscribed on power while looking fine on space.
What We Do
- Cabling Audits: We trace and document every cable in your environment — copper, fiber, and power — identifying active connections, abandoned runs, unlabeled cables, and standards violations that create risk and inefficiency.
- Rack Layout Review: We assess the physical layout of every cabinet, documenting equipment placement, available U-space, power utilization, airflow patterns, and compliance with manufacturer spacing requirements.
- Labeling Verification: We verify that all cables, ports, devices, and panels are labeled consistently and accurately — identifying gaps, mismatches, and outdated labels that create confusion during maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Asset Verification & Inventory: We perform a physical inventory of all rack-mounted and free-standing equipment, recording serial numbers, model numbers, firmware versions, and locations — reconciling against your existing asset records.
- Compliance Documentation: Our audit reports are formatted to satisfy facility requirements, customer SLAs, and regulatory frameworks (HIPAA, PCI-DSS, SOX, FISMA) that mandate documented, organized infrastructure.
- Power & Capacity Assessment: We measure power draw at the circuit and rack level, calculate available capacity, identify overloaded circuits, and flag single points of failure in your power distribution infrastructure.
- Future Planning Support: Based on our findings, we provide recommendations for capacity expansion, cable remediation, equipment refresh, and infrastructure optimization — helping you plan and budget for the next phase of growth.
- Detailed Reporting & Deliverables: Every audit produces a comprehensive report including rack elevation diagrams, cable schedules, asset inventories, photo documentation, issue summaries, and prioritized recommendations.
What an Audit Actually Produces
Not a walkthrough and a verbal summary. A set of artifacts you can hand to a finance team, an auditor, or the next engineer:
- Serial-level inventory. Make, model, serial, asset tag, and rack/U position for every device. Reconciled against your existing records with the discrepancies listed explicitly rather than quietly corrected.
- Rack elevations. Front and rear diagrams matching physical reality, including what is empty and where the contiguous free U actually is.
- Port map. Which device, which port, which patch panel, which switch. The document that turns a two-hour trace into a two-minute lookup.
- Measured power draw. Per cabinet and per circuit, against capacity, so the headroom figure is measured rather than estimated from nameplates.
- Lifecycle flags. Hardware past end-of-support or approaching it, with the dates, so refresh planning has a basis.
- Photographic record. Every cabinet, front and rear, dated.
Why Choose PYLON DC
You can’t manage what you haven’t documented — and in many data center environments, documentation falls behind reality after the first year. PYLON DC’s infrastructure audits close that gap, giving you an accurate, current baseline that supports informed decision-making. Our auditors are experienced data center technicians who understand what they’re looking at and what matters — not just listing what’s there, but identifying risks, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement. Whether you’re preparing for a compliance audit, planning a migration, onboarding a new facility, or simply trying to get your arms around a legacy environment, our audit services provide the clarity and documentation you need to move forward confidently.
Service Coverage
We provide infrastructure auditing services across Northern Virginia including Ashburn, Reston, Tysons Corner, Sterling, Herndon, Crystal City, Manassas, and the greater DMV region. Based in Falls Church, VA, we’re just 20 minutes from Data Center Alley.
